Realities of stereotypes about India and Indians

26 May

So you’ve heard plenty of things about India and don’t know what to believe and what not? Or are you traveling to India and don’t know what to expect? Well then you’re at the right place because here’s a post that’s going to tell you about the real India.

Here are the stereotypes:

  • Indians cannot speak English. This is a tricky one and it would depend on your location in India. In metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi you’ll find that most people can speak fluent English but the scenario is completely different if you go into inner parts of India or a remote village.
  • Indian food will make you sick. Again, this would depend on where you’re eating. Never eat on the streets or in open stalls. The food may be tasty but eating in open places is a total no no. Its not just about the flies and diseases when it comes to eating in India but also about spicy food which can often cause an upset stomach in people who are not used to such spices. I’ve had acidity plenty of times after eating spicy food. Its always better to ask the waiter if the dish is spicy.
  • Its not safe for women. This is not true if you can take a few precautions. The lifestyle in India is definitely not the same as in other parts of the world and you need to know what’s okay and what’s not. Most tourists get stared at or there are cases of people troubling them because they stand out in the crowd. Buy a few Indian clothes or wear simple jeans and tees. Don’t go out in a bikini top and a mini skirt. Preferably, go sightseeing with someone and not alone. Avoid going alone at night especially at parties or at the beach.
  • Its dirty. If you go to Indian villages you’d see that they are simple but not dirty. May be they don’t have all the modern facilities but they have a unique freshness about them. Its just the modern cities of India that are a bit messy.
  • People are uneducated. No they’re not. People in cities are highly educated and take education very seriously.
  • There are cows running around on the streets. That would be a very rare sight if you’re in a city. This is a stereotype which was true may be a couple of decades ago.
  • Its all about the Taj Mahal. Even though Taj Mahal is a beautiful work of art but thats not what India is all about. The truth is that most Indians haven’t seen the Taj Mahal. There are thousands of tourist destinations in India and to describe them I’d have to create another blog. So stop believing that the Taj is the ultimate tourist destination in India.

I hope you found this helpful.

I’ts not safe for women to go alone. Buying a few Indian clothes will not solve this problem, unless it’s a burka. People in most parts of the world never go out in bikini tops and mini skirts anyways, I would call that a ‘Hollywood’ stereotype. But it is very true that you want to draw as little attention to yourself as possible. I witnessed many cows and dogs roaming the streets of India, and I accepted it as part of the culture. And the Taj seems to be the pride of India, especially since it became a World Wonder. India is a developing country with many different people, and it’s hard to understand unless you have witnessed it.

bikini’s maybe not, but if you have never seen anyone wearing a skirt then i suggest you please leave the confines of your house which you don’t seem to have left for the last 50 years and take a peek outside.

      P.S.: I’m an Indian too.

Okay, people DO wear skirts in India nowadays! But, yes I’ve never seen anyone in India wearing a bikini. But skirts and shorts are the norm nowadays-there is absolutely no doubt about that!

Do u realize that swearing at others isn’t going to make a good impression of India on others? I’m saying this only because I’m also Indian and don’t want people to think negatively about my country. And I must point out that it is most definitely not in any Indian culture to use such abusive language…

    1. Indian food will make you sick, I did.
    2. It’s Dirty. I have never seen a place as dirty as Chennai. I had to throw my clothes away afterwards.
    3. There are cows running around on the streets. In Agra cows would go house to house for food like a stray a dog or cat.

its funny isnt? if its thats “dirty” to you, get some sensibility in your head and dont goo.

      • SparklyDangers November 29, 2011 at 2:17 AM #

What the fuck is wrong with you people?! India IS dirty, ACCEPT IT! I’m sorry for you guys who have never lived outside of the United States and seen what the word “clean” means. India is disgustingly dirty and that’s a FACT!

    • Rhiannon January 19, 2011 at 4:08 AM #

As the article said–it depends on where you get your food! It’s the same thing in America/England too! If you buy food out of a run down gas station, it is likely to make you sick. You probably bought your food out of a small stall or little shop–just because you wanted to save a couple of paisa. Chennai may be dirty, but I think throwing your clothes away is a bit overdramatic. I know you’re used to your platinum toilet seat and your gold bathtub, but sometimes you gotta live with what life gives you. I’ve been to India several times and I never have seen a stray cow wandering the streets. The idea is just preposterous. Stray dogs, maybe. But never a stray cow!

what’s wrong with clearing up some stereotypes? I actually thought this webpage was supposed to help people see that the stereotypes are not true or maybe partly true. So why are most people getting upset about it?
I have been to India. And I must agree that white people are often being stared at. And wearing Indian clothes doesn’t really help. But that’s normal and nothing to get upset about.
Even cows in the big cities are normal, just like the waste problem. But which big city doesn’t have that problem?
I have travelled alone and even though some people thought it would be dangerous, it wasn’t. But I travelled mostly at day-time, so I can’t really say if travellling and going out in the night would be very dangerous.
And for those people who will write follow-up comments: maybe try replying in a more objective way. Maybe, if your Indian, you could give more information if these stereotypes are correct or not, or maybe you could also give some travelling advice, instead of being all negative and rude.
    Thanks.

    • Prathyusha February 28, 2012 at 10:58 PM #

Hey, I’m really glad that atleast SOME people are being sensible. I’ve lived in different parts of India my whole life and I’m and Indian who has just moved to Canada. Based on my experience and general knowledge, I can say this about India:
      1) NOT all places in India are dirty. Most cities are, i agree. But then, I don’t understand why people keep saying North America isn’t dirty… I still can’t get over the chewing gum that’s everywhere. Frankly, i find it more disgusting than a little bit of dirt.
      2) Foreigners, especially white people are something unfamiliar and new to most Indians, hence the staring. It’s not meant to be offensive. It’s like a natural reaction like when you see a celebrity. Of course you are gonna stare.
      3) People actually treat foreigners very nicely because Indians do not consider themselves superior or anything and are very humble. Of course, this doesn’t mean they aren’t gonna try and charge you more for whatever service you require, so be on your guard.
      4) There are perverts and delinquents everywhere, including India. Do not judge India based on a few people. Foreigners are easy prey as they are not familiar with the place and culture, so don’t go roaming around the city after dark alone as you wouldn’t know it if you get to the bad parts of town.
      5) Indian people tend to have a stereotype of foreigners as being more liberal and somewhat carefree. This might make the perverts think they wouldn’t mind being raped. So try to dress modestly if you are in an unfamiliar place with strangers. Modest clothing would be something like comfortable jeans, and any top which isn’t too revealing. Basically, lay off the mini-skirts and bra-revealing tops and bikini tops.
      6) Travelling with a group atleast till you become familiar with the place is a good idea.
That is what I would like to know if I was planning on visiting India and I hope it is helpful to others…
India is a beautiful country with an ancient heritage still present in most villages and towns if not in the cities, and I hope everybody can experience it…

    This article is simply great.

Although some stereotypes are true like that its kinda dirty, bu come on …. just have a look at the population and u get the answer and its still hard to clean such a huge country.

Furthemore , nowadays most indian girls are more westernized than some of u think. Plus, they are very VERY disciplined (ofcourse, there are always exceptions) compared to other teenagers around the world. Thats a really important fact …. try to copy them.

  21. LL August 18, 2010 at 6:19 PM #

Wow – such anger, incorrect grammar and cursing. I was researching for a college project about how much India has grown in the entertainment business. Sad that most of you who say you are from india were so disgusting. Please don’t come to America – we have enough scumdogs of our own, and I don’t approve of or talk to them either.

  22. devils advocate September 2, 2010 at 4:49 AM #

Whats all this hate mah brothers. First off – india is a horrible place for women, there are tons of tourist rapes all over india, as well as reported cases of locals being raped. Taj Mahal is not really the greatest thing in India, there is better stuff. India is HELLA dirty, cities are dirty as hell, so are villages. There are fckin cows everywhere, and goats roam the streets as well. People are highly educated in cities? Who the heelll wrote this shizz? Thats like callin compton crips scholars. India is screwed up – primarily due to its government, but i think its slowly improving and it will become a superpower, if it doesn’t dissolve into seperate states. I have my own economic theory predicting a great depression within India’s economy – lets just wait and see =) 408 bitches rollin on 42′s

    • PT February 28, 2012 at 11:10 PM #

There are tourist rapes in every country, genius. And true, the government could do with a LOT of renovation. Also, yes, there are dogs on the streets, even cows in some cities as they are considered sacred. You see, the people in India just can’t bring themselves to murder all the dogs and cows roaming the streets simply for their convenience. Sorry if that offends you. And it depends on what you call dirty. What about all the dirtiness and grossness in other parts of the world, including USA and Canada? I see Chewing Gum EVERYwhere I go, and frankly, it’s just disgusting. So learn to look at things objectively. If U can’t, please refrain from commenting about places and things you don’t understand. And Indians are much more educated than you seem to think. Most people actually continue with their studies after school and get degrees, rather than just getting a job after high school which seems to be the norm for the bigger part of Western Society. Please DON’T JUDGE. Btw, did u know that one out of five women in North America has been sexually assaulted, and not Indians?

  23. Modit Rajan September 30, 2010 at 12:36 AM #

this is for indians takng offence .It is dirty meh ek hindustani hi hu.
i am an indian i know what i am talkin about
    cows do roam the streets

    • srishti February 15, 2011 at 3:41 PM #

tru… ive been to different parts in deli, bombay and haridwar.. buh seeing cows is normal cus its the way of life here… cows souldn’t bother people and tourists.

  24. Maheshwestofyerblues October 25, 2010 at 9:39 PM #

India is unbelievably vast and diverse. I’ve lived in Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai, three amongst the biggest “modern” metro cities in the country. The sad truth is, since we’re so divided and highly unsure of ourselves, a large amount of stereotyping comes from within India. For example, people in Mumbai may believe that cities in the south are similar to villages, that no one communicates in english etc. And that’s just as daft as an american assuming that elephants roam the streets all over India. Blissful in remaining uninformed and painfully idiotic, too many people take to posting silly hateful comments on the internet. The ones who’re lucky enough to be given a cultural platform for their views end up making excruciatingly awful films like eat pray love, thus confirming the strong existance of daft stereotypes and the internet’s racism- endorsing section.

get a life bastard! You ain’t gonna get nowhere bein’ racist n’ insulting people based on skin color!

    • PT February 28, 2012 at 11:14 PM #

seriously, if you are gonna stereotype, at least do it properly, Indians do not come in a single colour, unlike most North Americans. Indians could be as fair as any American, or black, not to mention the various shades of brown. So please don’t put all Indians in one category because we come in all shapes and sizes and colours…

  27. Someone November 20, 2010 at 3:21 PM #

I think this is a good article, but only one person’s point of view. Example, I live in NYC and people have varying opinions of the city. It’s all over the map and really depends on your personal experience. Now having said that, I was looking for an article to help me better understand the culture because I have to face it at work. I have to say that people of Asian and Indian decent, especially those that immigrated “recently” are sometimes rather difficult to work with. Each group poses a certain challenge. From my limited exposure it feels like Indian men have a definite complex about themselves. Almost like they view others, especially women as inferior and can be too offensive and direct at times. Can anyone comment? How do you deal with this type of attitude best? BTW before people start tearing what I wrote apart: I’m a white male, and outside of trying to understand cultural differences, I do not stereo type.

    • PT February 28, 2012 at 11:23 PM #

I like the way you are trying to understand the cultural difference before you stereotype and I commend you for that. Based on experience as an Indian, I can say that it is true that a majority of men consider women inferior to themselves, as it is something that is at least partially rooted in the way society works in India. Traditionally, men bring in the dough, and make financial decisions concerning the family. But the women hold the power in terms of household decisions. However, it has been steadily changing, especially in the cities, where both men and women take the decisions together. however, there are still some tasks which are considered a woman’s job, though the husband might sometimes help her out with them, such as cooking, doing the dishes, changing diapers, etc.. which also somewhat holds true for Western society. The Indians and Asians who have emmigrated recently are probably still not over the culture shock and will need some time to understand how things are done here. I can’t be of any help as regards to what can be done about it without insulting anyone… U can only hope that they understand that what the way they are behaving is unacceptable in this social context. Hope it helps you!

Indian food made me sick, people look western women as aliens and it’s extremely dirty. People are poor, uneducated but I liked Taj Mahal

  29. Bljdr November 23, 2010 at 11:57 PM #

i think that india is a beautiful country. MAny would say its dirty and poor and uneducated, but the people there arre the friendliest you will ever meet. You have no right to call it dirty, have some espect. For your information its the 4th richest country in the world, leaving canada behind by 5 other countries, so next next your gunna go and critize a country for what it looks like, think again.

They forgot that they are hairy and stinky. I should now. My grandfather and lots of my family are Indian and my mom works in IT with a bunch of them. But thats okay cause i LOVE India and Indians… really cool peeps and place.

  32. Atlantis January 29, 2011 at 2:43 PM #

It’s impossible for a country as diverse and complicated to be summed up in a few paragraphs. I am an Indian and am very proud to be one. Yes,I admit the basic article up there is relatively correct, but I’d like to say one thing : No society can ever be codified like DNA,definitely not one as India. We’re a country full of enigmas, contradictions, and riddles. Hell, sometimes I feel we don’t understand ourselves. But believe me,it’s not at the all ‘shitty-indecent-dull’ place many seem to think. Just understand the culture a bit,do a little research and preferably have someone knowledgeable with you – it’ll be unforgettable-for all the right reasons.
If I can help in any way, feel free to ask. :)

  33. Rohit February 5, 2011 at 7:36 AM #

Well,I m an Indian n pretty proud to be :)
We r still a developin nation so maybe yea, We r NOT perfect.
but come on guys, We don hv cows roamin here on streets, Infact when i rarely see one on streets i stare at it as if its an alien :P

People who think we hv shitty skin
Guys, We jus love our tanned brown skin..woohoo

About poverty, yea we do hv a lot of poverty everywhere, but who cares, We hang out in better parts of the cities,N if u r a tourist i say u shud also do the same :)

One thing i don like is regionalism,
people r more proud to be of thr own state than to b an Indian :/

    • srishti February 15, 2011 at 3:48 PM #

:D people who are more proud of their state have stereotypes abot people from different states… e,g the arrogant bengali woman or the picky gujrati type… i love india for what it is … dont complain about india if uve never been to a place like kenya or uganda… india is way better off. and i know indians who are richer and beter human beings than some americans or british i know … just cus ur a white tourist in india doesnt give u a reason to feel superior in any way.

  34. RaeJae February 19, 2011 at 4:05 PM #

I am American and I really like Indian people, although sometimes they do get offended if someone says some of them have Black skin, when in reality some of them do have Black skin. I have met quite a few dark-skinned Indians. Indian people, please learn to be proud of who you are regardless of the color of your skin. You are a beautiful people, whether your skin is white, tan, brown, black.

  35. Anonymous March 27, 2011 at 2:22 AM #

Lots of these stereotypes are partially true. Lots of villages and even developing towns are not very clean – partially due to the very high populations and minimal cleaning provided by the city/town. This also applies to the roaming cows. They do consider them holy, so they don’t try too much to control them in towns. It is true, though, that in cities, you will rarely find them.

But many of the other stereotypes are false. Lots of the people do know English – as many schools are English medium — even not in cities. Indian food – as long as you get it from a good restaurant/hotel — is actually REALLY good for you. It’s much better than all of the deep friend and greasy food in America.

Of course, I’m not saying that these stereotypes are true. All that I am saying is that it not right to call them false just by using the major cities (mostly in the North) as proof, because there are a LOT of people living out of cities (and not villages) who also know English and don’t smell.

  36. Anonymous March 27, 2011 at 3:24 AM #

I think alot of stereotypes about India are just plain horrible and mean. There shouldn’t be these types of things going around, and who ever thinks so needs a reality check. They are the same as all of us! Were no more ‘uncivilized’ then anyone else! My final words on the subject: If you’re an Indian, be PROUD of it!

    • SparklyDangers November 29, 2011 at 2:22 AM #

Indian born American Sikh here. Let me start off by saying: you want clean, Kashmir of Punjab are good. You want rape? Try Orissa or a far Eastern state. Want cows? Don’t go to Punjab, cows are a Hindu thing. In Punjab there no cows, but a bunch of dogs. Also, for the racists out there, I’m a neurologist that graduated from Harvard in 2008. • SparklyDangers November 29, 2011 at 2:24 AM #

Man, you are so fucking messed up! You’re talking about white people? Look at Indians! All they are is a bunch of emotional fools who can’t STAND it when someone else says the truth about their country! I think white people should stop arguing with YOU people because it’s absolutely impossible to logically reason with a bunch of emotional dicks!

  43. Nihal October 17, 2011 at 5:04 PM #

Oh by the way… I’m Indian but I don’t love it or anything… It’s just like any other country… Maybe special because I was born and brought up here… and so many fond memories…. Anyway folks we are all humans… Except maybe for the white people. They must have been created by God to show us what we would be if he didn’t give us a brain and a good heart along with that. We need to be thankful for not being born white. White babies look like pigs when they are born. If you don’t believe me you can see for yourself. And their women are ugly… Most of them are without make up. And their men are biased, good for nothing man whores… Their kids are fat and they are unhygienic.

    • SparklyDangers November 29, 2011 at 2:28 AM #

Okay Nihal. I have got to say that there are a lot of messed up people on here, but you definitely get the cake on that note! How DARE you say ANYTHING rude about ANY child?! How dare you say that white people’s children look like pigs?! Children are the most innocent and amazing beings on this earth and if you want to be a racist bastard, GO FUCKING AHEAD, but keep the comments off of CHILDREN! And HOW DARE you insult white women?! How dare you insult ANY women! ALL women are absolutely beautiful you fucking bastard! And you know what let’s not even talk about hygiene because you might wanna take a look at the hygiene in whatever shit hole village you live in you son of a bitch!

      • PT February 28, 2012 at 11:31 PM #

Ugh! And just when I was thinking you might have some sense in you, you go and insult villages… Damn it! I’m disappointed that I’m disappointed… :-| But seriously, I wish people would just learn to look at the good things about each other and ignore or avoid the bad ones. Cuz, believe me, it’s not gonna change because a few people start abusing the country or its cleanliness standards.

  44. SDSD November 21, 2011 at 10:09 AM #

This list hardly covers the topic but you have left out one of the most insulting stereotype of all – that Indians stink. To be fair a lot of stereotypes are partly true but to generalise a population of 1.2 billion and rising is stretching it a bit too far. I am an Indian and you have no idea how it stings to listen or read such stuff. It’s really awful and I am glad that you wrote this article. Thanks..

I’m going to India for my first time in about a week, I have an opportunity to see Tamil Nadu and Kerala. :) I’m very excited!

I’m a lady, and so I have gotten plenty of sagely advice from relatives (who have never been to India, naturally) about what India IS. I liked this list a lot for that, but whoever thinks Indians are not educated has clearly never met anyone from India.

What are India’s stereotypes towards Americans, or American women? Is it the usual ones? Fat, arrogant, rich, and slutty?

I have heard several times from Indian ladies that “American women love to get divorces”, so that must be a pervasive one (even one as specific as “at 40, american women divorce their husbands”!).

While studying in Japan, my cousin’s classmates asked him where his “government-issued gun” was…hehe.

Just curious, answer if you feel inclined. I liked your article. :)

plenty of places to visit and enjoy in northern India (Simla, agra. Kashmir and some holly places) and Kerala (Backwater, Kovalam Beach etc,)….specially Tamilnadu…i dont know much but there will definately be some. keep ur eyes and brains active, no need to worry. India is a beautiful country but a bit populated, which itself is a cultural diversity…be happy… thanqs…..

    • AnIndian December 10, 2011 at 7:24 PM #

Rich? Yes (you may get robbed by merchants with their prices set too high so, if shopping take a local with you lol), Arrogant, Fat and Slutty? not really! The whole divorce thing comes from a very old and widespread myth that westerner’s culture isnt as family oriented as indian’s is. Some people with old beliefs still believe in them, most people with a better understanding of international cuture do not.
You’re welcome to our country btw, on behalf of all the fellow country men and women I wish you a very peaceful and fun stay :)

I’m an Indian, i admire and respect my country and at the same time am not afraid to admit what the truth is.
Yes, some parts of india are quite not so well managed and can be classified as dirty by someone from lets say a more developed country.
Yes, people from different ethinicity, when come to visit, are stared at and in some worse cases eve teased but by SOME twisted freaks. BUT ‘twisted freaks’ are not limited to india. One may find them in all the countries. The guy with his ‘pussy talk’ proved my very point himself.
Yes, there are stray cows in cities and more in towns. But thats because they are considered sacred by Hindus which make up a majority of indian population. Although, I admit it is pretty annoying when there is a cow sitting in the middle of the road I have to use lol
India, like any other country has its flaws but shines in other areas. Indians are some of the smartest people in the world. We congratulate United States on the mighty MIT but we have our own IITs too which are respected internationally. India is maybe not the best country in the world but most of the indians are working hard towards placing his/her country better.
I have a very humble requests from my fellow Indians to keep their calm and treat comments from foreign country population with respect no matter what message it conveys. This is what, I’m sure, one of our greatest treasures, Gandhi Ji, would’ve asked for too.
    Jai Hind.

Most of the things the blogger says here are true and lets not fool ourselves. We as Indians know this is exactly what is happening in our country so pls dont make it look like we are as refined as the west.
Everyone here says I’m proud to be an Indian. OH REALLY? And what exactly is it that you are proud of. Give me just 3 examples and I will believe you outright.
Don’t forget if we really were proud to be Indians, we wouldn’t still be a third world country for so many decades. And lets face it, India will never improve for the better.

    • PT February 28, 2012 at 11:48 PM #

Wow, aren’t you a ray of sunshine? And, darling, if u think India isn’t going to change, why don’t YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, instead of sitting and complaining about it? And since you agree with all the stereotypes here, you are saying that since you are an Indian, you STINK? And you are an uneducated, unemployed loser? What? Oh, so you are the one exception to that stereotype? Of course you are. As am I. As are most of the Indians I happen to know.
So, you want to know why I am proud to be an Indian? Here you go:
      1) We are a humble lot. We do NOT consider ourselves superior to other races as we clearly show by our namaste. Unfortunately, it’s being replaced by a cool “Hello”…
      2) Our culture and traditions have been passed down for centuries and are renowned world-wide.
      3) We are a malleable country. We have been conquered and ruled over by not only the British, but may others before them. Yet, we have retained our culture, only adding to it and not completely adopting the outsider’s culture.
      4) Indians adjust quickly to whatever situation they are placed in, and survive.
      5) The amount of diversity we have in our country is amazingly astounding. It is unbelievable. We have diversity in everything – language, religion, physical appearance of people, geographical features of the land, and yet, we are all Indian. There is no other country in the world that has such diversity in all aspects of life.
And that, my friend, is why I love India and am proud to be an Indian.

Of course, that said, I can also come up with compelling reasons as to why i dislike, even hate, India the way it is now, but no matter what, I will always love my country. It is bad enough that I see non-Indians bashing my country, there is no need for Indians themselves to bash it as well… It is similar to the treachery of Brutus…

But dude, Taj Mahal is the ultimate destination to visit in India. Think about it if you had only place to visit in India?

C’mon Guys .. U all are educated n matured ..so please behave in the same way !!
Am an Indian n accept that there are problems here ,may be more than other developed countries. but c’mon .. temme a place in the world where u wont find 1 .
India is a big country n lost much of its wealth during British rule..
Also , its basically an agricultural country so most of the ppl in olden times were farmers.
It will take time for a nation 2 grow , n its Developing at a good pace .
Indians r NOT uneducated . In fact Indians r famous for being genius at Computers n Software Development.. But m not here to discuss that. LET ME RESTRICT MY TALK FOR THE FOREIGNERS WHO LOOK 4 A PLEASANT N MEMORABLE STAY IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY.
    1. India is a religious n cultural country , with many different cultures n religions living together . Some orthodox Indians might find it a cause of regionalism , but with increase in connectivity , such is not the case with Indian youth. So our guests can make the best out of it , while travelling across different regions of India .
    2. Indians follow the the ideal of “Atithi Devo Bhava”..meaning . “Guest is equivalent to God” n are very emotional, helpful n caring ppl . Due to bigger population n bit less education, the Probability of meeting WRONG people is more , if u land in a wrong place . So, please Google up a little bit to find best places n good people.
    3. Most of the Indians are Hindu , n we worship Cow . So we dont slaughter them like in other countries n are a bit reluctant to remove them from streets . Though its pretty disgusting too ( with increase of Vehicles on road ) ,but times are changing . U wont find them in big cities. But if u find one . jus take a good pic :) , dont get annoyed please.
    4. U have everything in India. U can find SLUMS alongwith huge buildings , n stray dogs roaming on well built roads. U find urself in a hectic crowdy area in morning and in the evening u can relax in 5* hotels , spas n discs. Guys ..this is what makes India , ” India” ..its “UNITY IN DIVERSITY”..U wont find this in Africa n US all together . So , foriegners please utilize this fact .. n Indians .. pls be PROUD of it !!!
    5. White people are stared at because U out stand in public. But thats not a reaon for anyone to be harmed, till the time ure aware of where n with whom u are. Be a little more cautious and carry phone nos of local frens / police. No harm can happen in public places. N for starring part , ure mature enough to just let it go .
    6. There are many more things which i think have already been discussed and easier to find online . My idea was to open the minds of people ( both foreigners n Indians) with respect to my country . I LOVE MY COUNTRY N RESPECT ALL OTHER NATIONS AT THE SAME TIME, whether rich or poor , n request evry1 to do the same . After all , the basic thing is ..we all r Humans.
Lastly , jus to add humour to this serious talk ..its my kind advice .. Please carry a good Camera , else ull seriously miss something Big :)
Have fun , njoy n have a great time here !!

For those who complain Indians are dirty…

Well, I’d rather live in the sweaty, hot, air polluted, sandy areas of Chennai than be in the company of many white women who do extremely degrading stuff in porn (licking butt, eating crap, sucking off 1000+ guys in a lifetime, and having gallons of oil and sperm splattered on their faces). Trust me, I’m perfectly happy eating spicy Indian food in the company of Indian civilians than fearing to be in the company of child molesters and porn stars, who are most likely white people.

    - Coming from an Indian male born and brought up in America :)

In all honesty, I have only been to India once, I was born and raised here since my parents moved to America, but we are from South India and when we went to Hyderabad no cows so that stereotype is definetly not for all of india. Also everything has bad and good I have friends from all culture and does it honestly matter. You can be proud of where you’re from and sort of melt into a pot right?… that might just be me being naive though…

Well, the stereotypes were mostly true. But the comments that followed were really sickening. I am an Indian and proud to be one in spite of all the problems that my country and its people face. Yes, poverty is rampant in India and illiteracy and dirt and poor infrastructure are the burning problems in India. India is a land of contrasts and you will see that most of the super-brains have been Indians. The zero was invented by an Indian and so was the hotmail that you use! Surgery wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for an Indian to invent it.
Half of the brains in America work because there is an ‘Indian’ supporting them! Yes, that is true because most of the West’s businesses thrive as they outsource all their stuff to India as we are a brainy lot!
When it comes to safety, it depends on the places you are visiting. In Mumbai you can roam all night alone and no one will ever touch you! Not all people in India are rapists!
You need to visit my country and understand its culture and history before passing shoddy comments.
Also, it is you (the Westerners) who are spreading these shitty stereotypes about India through crappy movies like Slumdog Millionaire! Also, the tourists that come to India like to film naked beggars and dirt on the roads. Can’t you guys focus on the development and the positive aspects of my country?
I’m proud of being an Indian and will always be! We are a perfect example of unity in diversity…..
